Foreign driving licences in Sweden: exchange or new licence

A non-EEA licence is valid in Sweden for one year from the day you are registered (folkbokförd). Only licences from the UK, the Faroe Islands, Switzerland or Japan can be exchanged. Everyone else needs a Swedish licence through the full test route.

Which route applies to you

  • UK, Faroe Islands, Switzerland or Japan: you can apply to exchange your licence.
  • Any other non-EEA country: your licence cannot be exchanged. You need to get a Swedish licence: a learner permit (körkortstillstånd), risk education and the theory and practical tests.
  • An EEA licence that was itself exchanged from a non-EEA licence: since 1 May 2026, Sweden only accepts these in three cases. Check the Transportstyrelsen announcement.

Frequently asked questions

Can I exchange my licence in Sweden?

Only licences from the UK, the Faroe Islands, Switzerland or Japan can be exchanged in Sweden (non-EEA). Licences from other countries outside the EEA cannot be exchanged. They stay valid for one year from the date you are registered (folkbokförd), and after that you need a Swedish licence through the full test route.
