An International Driving Permit is not a licence

What an IDP is, who issues it, and why you can't exchange it for a local licence.

What an IDP is

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a translation of your national driving licence. It is issued by the country that issued your licence, and you carry it together with the licence.

What it is not

An IDP is not a licence on its own, and you cannot exchange it. When you exchange a licence, you exchange the original national licence.

Where to get one

From the country that issued your licence, before you travel. In the UK, for example, IDPs are issued in person at certain shops with PayPoint and cost £5.50, according to GOV.UK (opens in a new tab).
